Chiropractic regulation
Chiropractic is regulated by Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom. The Chiropractors Act 1994 gives regulatory powers to the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). The GCC’s register of chiropractors opened in June 1999 and approximately 2200 chiropractors are currently registered. It is illegal for anyone in the UK who is not registered with the GCC to describe themselves as a chiropractor. For more information about the GCC, visit www.gcc-uk.org.uk
Chiropractic care
Chiropractors are competent to diagnose and treat disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health (General Chiropractic Council, www.gcc-uk.org )

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

  • Chiropractors specialize in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mechanical disorders of the spine, joints and muscles.
  • The use of subtle adjustments can relieve pain and discomfort while increasing the mobility of joints.
  • There are many different techniques chiropractors can use to make an adjustment.
  • The techniques used in this clinic are called Activator and McTimoney, both of which use a low force adjustment.

WHAT CONDITIONS DO CHIROPRACTORS TREAT?

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder and hip pain
  • Headaches [including migraine]
  • Sporting Injuries
  • Repetitive Strain Injuries

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL YOU NEED?

A course of treatment varies between individuals, on average a course can include between 2-6 treatments. Chiropractors work in co-operation with other health care professionals in order to provide an efficient care plan to all patients.

Evidence for chiropractic
There is a range of evidence to indicate that manipulation is safe and effective. This includes: United Kingdom back pain exercise and manipulation (UK BEAM) randomised trial:
Effectiveness of physical treatments for back pain in primary care.

In 2006, the UK Government’s Musculoskeletal Services Framework stated that: “Chiropractors provide evidence-based, timely and effective assessment, diagnosis and management of certain musculoskeletal disorders.”

Additional Techniques practiced in conjunction with chiropractic manipulation

Medical acupuncture:
Acupuncture is also practised at the clinic primarily to provide pain relief, and uses a slightly different approach to treatment than traditional Chinese acupuncture.
Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle, and can produce a variety of effects. It increases the body’s natural pain killers, endorphin and serotonin, in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and the brain, which modifies the way pain signals are received.

Deep tissue massage: This type of massage is used in conjunction with chiropractic manipulation to help facilitate the adjustment, by releasing tight, often spasmodic muscle. It is also a useful technique to help disperse swelling around a joint that has recently been injured.

Rehabilitation exercises:
Exercise is a crucial part of rehabilitation and prehabilitation of patients receiving chiropractic care, and exercises are prescribed at each session. General and specific exercise advice is also offered to try and support each patient attending the clinic.
